BAZAAR Launches National Jewellery Awards

October 2005

The winners of the Harper's BAZAAR first-ever jewellery awards will be announced at a glamorous black-tie dinner at the Park Hyatt on October 27.

Channel 9's Helen Kapalos will emcee the event and guest presenters include Erica Baxter, Jessica Rowe and Michelle Jank.

The Harper's BAZAAR Diamond Guild Australia 2005 Jewellery Awards is the first-ever truly national competition. The criteria challenged new and established jewellery designers to create inspiring pieces that feature diamonds.

The judges selected the nominees based on innovative design, wearability, fashion savvy and sheer beauty.

There are five categories in the awards:

  • The Diamond Solitaire Award - a solitaire piece of jewellery where the main focus is a single diamond of .5ct-1.5ct.
  • The Diamond Only Award - a diamond piece, not a ring, featuring only diamonds to a maximum retail value of $35,000.
  • The Fancy Diamond Award - any diamond piece where a maximum of 80 per cent of the diamond weight used in the piece consists of fancy cut diamonds to a maximum retail value of $35,000.
  • The Diamond Fantasy Award - diamonds must be 80 per cent of the gemstones used; the rest is at the designer's discretion.
  • The Pink Diamond Award - a piece where the minimum pink diamond weight is 25 per cent of the total carat used.

Nominees are featured in the November issue and the winners will feature in the December issue.

Tickets for the award ceremony are $100 each with all proceeds going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

The panel of judges are:

  • Alison Veness-McGourty, editor - Harper's BAZAAR
  • Jamie Huckbody, fashion features director - Harper's BAZAAR
  • Cameron Marks, chairman - Diamond Guild Australia
  • Ann Middleton, Jeweller
